A response the Standard Times Opinion piece by Casino Developer Steve Norton; Casinos would bring jobs, no diploma required

Perfect! Just what New Bedford needs! More jobs that require no diploma. Let us build and we will employ your uneducated and your stupid. Steve Norton of Illinois, in his editorial to the standard Times published on September 28, has both insulted New Bedford's citizens and degenerated us to the modern equivalent of useless beyond sweep the floor factory work. Is this what we call economic development for New Bedford? First Scott Lang rhetorically shoots for the moon at Fairhaven Mills and then delivers a grocery store via a secret deal where New Bedford's uneducated can get part time work at subsistence wages, if they can pass the CORI. Now the casino industry wants access to our apparently vast pool of dumbness. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the sheer in-your-face insulting audacity

Some will sneer that both Scott Lang and Steve Norton are right. But I see the efforts of people like Buddy Andrade and realize that our citizens are not dumb or under educated, they are under appreciated. If you listen to our local talk radio, you will hear from some people who are outstandingly intelligent; Eddie Johnson, Steve Santos, Lynn Coish, Jerry Pinto, and many many more fill the airwaves with good judgment, sound advice and obvious civic pride. People who work in the needle trades are not morons with the simple ability to sew, they are bright skilled artisans who live productive lives. Our fishermen are not dolts. They are some of the hardest working people surviving in a over regulated world. Where people like Steve Norton would whimper these people persevere. Living in the conditions that we endure in New Bedford has created some of the toughest people on Earth. I take offense when people who do not know New Bedford talk about us as if we are good for nothing except simple labor.

New Bedford has challenges, but so does everyone else. To simply categorize our population in such eloquent but disparaging terms and ideas as did Steve Norton, I for one hope that he stays in Illinois. New Bedford is a tough town with tough people. The sooner we decide our own future and stop waiting for the politicians to provide one for us the better off we will all be. In the mean time, pretend we have some feelings and intelligence. Life is hard enough without being treated like lap dogs for the rich and ignorant.
